Legal Academic Skills Centre Support for MLS Students as we go online

Dear Students

We wanted to let you know about the ongoing support you can access through the Legal Academic Skills Centre as we move to teaching and learning online.

We know this can be a challenging time so please do not hesitate to reach out if you want help with your studies.

We prepared a guide for online participation with 10 tips for online learning.  2020 Guidelines for online participation in law subjects – final

It is also available in the LASC Canvas community along with all our other resources.  You will find it on the main landing page for your group (JD or MLM).

If you haven’t already self-enrolled in the new LASC Canvas community, follow this link.  (If you received the email with this information last night, you are already enrolled.)

If you have ideas for additional resources and supports, please don’t hesitate to email me (Chantal) at Chantal.morton@unimelb.edu.au.  After the dust settles and we are in the online groove, we will have time to create more resources.

On to the update re services.

Our plans for JD students:

  • The EAGLE program for first year students is shifting in week 4. Your facilitators will continue to support you in your skill building, mid-semester assignments, and prep for final exams.  They will be in touch today (Friday) to let you know the plans for maintaining momentum.  Please be good to them.  We are all learning the technology and experimenting as we go.
  • All LASC workshops (torts essays and exams) will be recorded and posted to the LASC Canvas community before the date of the original session.
  • The consultations through the Writing Centre for first year Torts essays are still confirmed – all consultations will be done with Zoom meetings.
  • All senior JD appointments with me are still confirmed – they will be done with Zoom meetings.
  • All consultations with the research advisor will also be done with Zoom meetings.
  • The Guide to Academic Success is posted to the Canvas community and includes a lot of advice on the different stages of study and forms of assignments in the JD.
  • The Success at MLS website also has a lot of advice on studying and assignments. We’ll also be posting advice on learning online when we see something helpful.  If you want to suggest items or links, please send them through to Brigette at unimelb@gmail.com or Chantal at Chantal.morton@unimelb.edu.au.
  • I am still coming in to the office so if you want to meet in person just send a request with two days and time frames and I will confirm a time for a chat.

Our plans for MLM students:

  • I will be creating videos for the remaining MLM workshops and will post them in the LASC Canvas community.
  • I will be posting the slides and handouts from the already completed workshops to the LASC Canvas community over the weekend of 21 March.
  • We are still booking consultations for review of the MLM essays (not exams). At the moment, we can still meet in person according to university policy but that may change.
  • If you prefer a Zoom meeting just let me know – it is easy to arrange.
  • All consultations with the research advisor will also be done with Zoom meetings.
  • The Guide to Academic Success is posted to the Canvas community and includes a lot of advice on the different stages of study and forms of assignments.
  • The Success at MLS website also has a lot of advice on studying at MLS. We’ll also be posting advice on learning online when we see something helpful.  If you want to suggest items or links, please send it through to Brigette at unimelb@gmail.com or Chantal.
